Trees for Koala Habitat Project

Recognising that some of our fauna, such as the Koala are highly dependent on established private plantations for habitat, Carbon Landscapes is working with the plantation industry to enable these areas transition from being plantations to become crucial Koala habitat.

Background

Since the 2000s, there has been an unprecedented increase in the area of blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) plantations in southern Australia. In southwest Victoria alone, some additional 80,000 hectares of commercial blue gum have been planted.

This increase has significantly increased the habitat available for Koalas. In fact, research published in the journal Landscape and Urban Planning, has found there are more Koalas in plantations than in surrounding native habitat.

We’ve recognised that some of our fauna, such as the Koala, are highly dependant on established private blue gum plantations for habitat. That’s why Carbon Landscapes is working with the plantation industry to recognise these opportunities and help these areas transition from being plantations to become crucial Koala habitat.

Trees for Koala Habitat Project Details

Carbon Landscapes is working in partnership with Heartwood Plantations and landowners with private forestry plantations, to transition low-value timber into high-value Koala habitat. Rather than clear low-value blue gum plantations, we are working with foresters to preserve these plantations, adding other biodiversity values such as mid and lower story indigenous plants and leaving fallen timber to create habitat for other native fauna. Eventually these areas will revert back to native habitat. We will be working with neighbouring community groups and landowners to monitor populations in partnership with research institutions such as Federation University.
